Merging Airport and City--From Schiphol Airport City to Amsterdam Airport Corridor

In the process of globalization, a concentration of internationally oriented urban activities seems to take place in a limited number of highly competitive 'global city regions'. In the Netherlands Amsterdam has strengthened its position as a centre for finance, services and head offices at the cost of other cities like Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Global city regions like Amsterdam are increasingly facing a highly dynamic global competition for (economic) activities. Their position in the global networks of city regions is of great strategic importance and is strongly supported by the direct destinations their airports offer.
