摘要

Life on Earth has evolved to be a noisy affair, but since humans joined the cacophony, competition for'sound space' has become intense. Jonnie Hughes explains why we need to turn the volume down. Did you have a peaceful night? A research team at the United Nations has discovered that a third of Europeans have their sleep disturbed by noise. Sounds may not be loud enough to wake you, but can throw your body into a mild panic, increasing your blood pressure and heart rate as you try to escape the perceived danger. Over time, this may affect your health and possibly even reduce your lifes-pan. By day, we're simply drowned in our own din. If noise pollution is bad for us, what is it doing to wildlife?
