CCTV is widely assumed to be a major deterrent against crime, especially thefts of and from vehicles. But is this assumption correct? Having spent ￡17m on supporting the installation of CCTV schemes in town centres, car parks, hospitals and other public areas between 1997 and 2003, the Home Office has been analysing the effectiveness of these CCTV Challenge schemes.
