Korea has a traditionally sound basis of biotechnology and its related technologies. In particular, fermentation technology, antibiotics, diagnostics, vaccines are at the international competitive level. With domestic biotechnology R&D prowess growing by leaps and bounds, Korean government announced a 10-year umbrella plan, called "Bio-Vision 2016" (2007-2016), in November 2006 in order for Korea to become one of the top seven innovators in the world in biotechnology. However, Korea needs to create unique solutions for focused strategies and competitive niches that affect its own particular strengths and challenges.
