QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATIONS ON THE INHABITANIS OF THE GALLS OF PHANACIS HYPOCHOERIDIS ON CATS-EAR(HYPOCHAERIS RADICA TA L)

The plurilocular stem galls of cat's-ear (Hypochaeris radicata L.), induced by the cynipid Phanacis hypochoeridis (Kieffer, 1837), are widespread and locally common in North East England (Ellis 2002a,b). Previously (Ellis 2002c) I reported that the insect community of galls collected at five locations in the region included six species of parasitoids in addition to the host cynipid. The parasitoids, belonging to three families and five genera were: Eurytomidae, Eurytoma hypochoeridis Claridge,1960 and Eurytoma cynipsea Boheman, 1836; Pteromalidae, Pteromalus vibulenus (Walker, 1839), Stinoplus etearchus (Walker, 1848), and Leptomeraporus nicaee (Walker, 1839); and Eupelmidae, Eupelmus vesicularis (Retzius,1783).
