Shape variations in strips can occur during both strip production in hot and cold rolling mills and during downstream processing. Depending on their appearance, shape defects can be divided into two main categories: flatness deviations and straightness deviations. Based on this generic categorization, flatness and straightness defects are classified into subgroups. Shape defects can also be distinguished according to how they originated, i.e. as unwindable and non-unwindable faults. Different proceedings are required to eliminate these defects.This article also deals with the methods of describing and assessing shape defects in hot and cold rolled strips. Examples will be used to illustrate these.
