A Simpler Place in Time

There was a time in the California fishing fleet when it seemed we all knew each other. I know that can't be true, but that's how I remember it. We had some outrageous characters who will live in my memory forever. And as time goes by, the things I heard and saw through those years will seem like fiction — but they weren't. I remember everyone had a mate or a deckhand or a partner who fished with them. There were guys like "Lefty" out of Bodega. I never knew why they called him Lefty until I met himone day and you guessed it, he had one arm. I can't remember which one, probably the right one. That's the sort of humor that was around just after the 1960s. He had a boat equipped with poles that operated by hydraulics. I was fascinated by this invention brought about by necessity. Aren't they all? He was a good fisherman. Then, there was Resurrection Bill, also out of Bodega. He had corks attached to everything — wine corks. His keys, eye glasses, knife, even his little dog, as I recall, were dressed in cork.
