The Sustainability Professional: On the Record with Kelly Wellman, Sustainability Officer

The student body at some state universities is so large that campuses themselves can seem like small cities replete with restaurants, barber shops, computer stores, and bus systems. In 1884, just eight years after Texas A&M College (now a university) opened in neighboring College Station, the city of Bryan, TX sported a population of 3,000. By the year 2000, the population had grown to 65,660 and become the home of a number of university-related businesses. So when Kelly Wellman left her job with the city of Bryan to become the first sustainability officer at Texas A&M University (with 49,000 students and a 5,000-acre main campus), she was used to dealing with a good-sized population. Sustainability: The Journal of Record editor Lori Tripoli talked to Wellman about the relevance of her prior experience to her current position, how the school managed to decrease its environmental footprint even as it grew in size, and how sustainability activities are coordinated among a population that's so vast.
