A U.S.-China research group is working on a white roof coating that can repel both water and dirt, letting the coating last longer while staying cleaner and therefore keeping the building cooler. Led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (or Berkeley Lab, a research facility owned by the University of California), the group is developing something called a "superhydrophobic additive." Coatings utilizing the new additive "would be ideal for cities with elevated pollution levels," according to an announcement from the laboratory. The new coating would be especially helpful for the Chinese, who are dealing in some areas with near-catastrophic levels of pollution.
