Childhood narcolepsy with cataplexy: A newly reported phenotype of an old disease?

In the current issue of Sleep Medicine, Heier et al [1 ] reported on the increased occurrence of narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) in children and adolescents after being vaccinated against the H1N1 influenza A with Pandemrix? in Norway. The authors found that the NC incidence among vaccinated children between the ages of four and 19 years was 10 out of 100,000 in the first year after vaccination and subsequently fell to 1.1 out of 100,000 in the second year; the latter value was comparable to that among unvaccinated children in the same period [1].
