On March 11,2011, an M9 ocean trench-type earthquake, the Great East Japan Earthquake, occurred with an epicenter in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Tohoku area. Triggered by the earthquake, huge tsunami waves of unprecedented scale attacked the coastal areas of East Japan, causing massive destruction.
