Apremilast (Otezla): A new oral treatment for adults with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis

Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder affecting approximately 1% to 3% of the U.S. population. Significant geographic variation has been noted in the prevalence of psoriasis, likely reflecting the fact that environmental and genetic factors influence this disorder. Although it is a multisystem disease, the major manifestation of psoriasis is erythematous, scaly patches or plaques on the skin that are often pruritic and/ or painful.
