A procedure has been developed for the determination of ferbam (ferric dimethyldithiocarbamate) using 8-hydroxyquinoline as a chelating agent which is extracted with chloroform in the pH range of 8.5-9.5 and the absorbance is measured at 465 nm against the reagent blank. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 1.2-48 ppm. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity are 1.68 * 10~4 lmol~(-1) cm~(-1) and 0.024 #mu#g cm~(-2) respectively. Average of five determinations of sample solution of ferbam containing 96 #mu#g of ferbam gave a mean absorbance of 0.40. The method is sensitive, selective and can be used for the direct determination of ferbam in commercial samples and from grains (rice and wheat). The limit of determination from food stuffs is 0.38 mg/kg.
