History in contemporary design

摘要

Contemporary design practice is aggressive and fast paced. As a direct result, it is not often that landscape architects are afforded the luxury or time to find inspiration through fortuity or chance. Recent design problems, which are being met by licensed and highly trained design professionals, now occur under progressively complex and convoluted conditions. Simultaneously, as our discipline gains public attention and generates greater critical discourse, it becomes increasingly competitive, political, and high profile. Given the prevailing paradigm for the profession, it is more critical than ever that landscape architects have techniques for both finding and founding not only inspiration, but also novel types of pattern, circulation, organization, program, and hierarchy. Key to this working and expanding skill set is an instrumental comprehension of the discipline's history.
