Want a competitive edge in the fresh marketplace Maybe you should consider purchasing the exclusive rights to a new spud variety. That's what Klamath Basin Fresh Direct did when it acquired the exclusive license to grow and market the Purple Pelisse,a new variety developed by the Tri-State Potato Variety Development Program. The co-op just wrapped up the first full year of production of thepurple skin/purple flesh tuber it's renamed and is marketing as Purple Fiesta."Exclusivity gives you some marketing advantage because noone else can grow it. They can't compete in your marketplace," said co-op chairman Dan Chin, a Klamath Falls, Ore., grower. The Purple Fiesta cooks up well, tastes good and is loaded with antioxidants."We are playing up the health aspects to it," Chin said. "It works good in a medley. It adds some color to the mix."
