Intellectual property aspects of technological security and economic efficiency

In Anglo-Saxon law, intellectual property is traditionally divided into industrial property and authors' rights. Industrial property refers to the tangible rights covered by patents. Given the finite reserves of natural resources, many industrial nations seek competitive advantage by increasing the added value in raw-material processing. This facilitates rapid technological development and permits the exploration of important market niches, with the creation, in particular, of effective institutions for the protection of intellectual property rights and the acquisition of property that is not material. Harmonization of the global economic and legal infrastructure permits orderly scientific and technical competition in the international marketplace. One example of global regulation is the Agreement on Commercial Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (ACAIPR), initiated by member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This document ensures effective protection of rights holders and uncompromising respect for their interests.
