Over the past years the process of flexible rolling of tailor rolled blanks (TRB) has been developed and implemented as highly innovative automotive light weight design technology. Muhr & Bender KG transferred initial research and development solutions jointly obtained with the Institute of Metal Forming at Aachen University of Technology into an efficient series production process with a great variety of application potential in automotive structure and chassis design. The dynamic cold rolling process transforms constant thickness hot strip into a strip with variable thickness which copes with the load case to which the final car component manufactured out of TRB is exposed. Therefore, the vehicle structure is only strengthened in the areas where high loads apply and the overall weight can be significantly reduced. Flexible rolling of TRB is made possible by several specifically developed process features derived inhouse from the company's expertise and volume production experience. These features include a specific mill system design, a high precision measurement system, a real time close loop control system or adapted follow-up processes as in the subsequent blanking operation.
