B&J Specialty. Wawaka, Ind., manufao1 tures large die and mold sets for the appliance and automotive industries/ As is the case with most domestic die and mold shops today the company realized that faster cavity roughing was key to getting the whole tool set out the door sooner. Process Engineer Scott Sizemore figured he could be roughing faster than the 80 IPM currently being achieved. In fact, the company's vertical mil had a 20,000-RPM spindle with higher feed to spare. But whenever Sizemore turned up the feed, the solid carbide ball nose mill dulled out in just minutes, at a cost of 90 dollars each time. "It was one of our bottleneck operations, so any improvement here would benefit the whole enterprise," Sizemore explained.
