"Worn effect" decoration saw its boom during the beginning of the 1990's, when a series of architectural restorations of historic buildings was started in many European cities. The public administration of said cities issued regulations imposing restorations to retain the buildings' original aspect as much as possible: as a result, a research began on the materials to be used, involving the entire range of bricks, roofing tiles and other building materials. This brought about new building products imitating those marked by time (worn effect). The first countries to take on this new type of product were the Mediterranean countries such as France, Spain and Italy, however in the past few years these have been adopted by the Northern European countries, which have begun to take interest in this type of decoration as an alternative to a single colour full surface covering.
