The purpose of this research was to compare the use of cement slurry in the construction ofcement-treated base (CTB) to the conventional method of using cement powder. In addition, differences in construction using cement slurry with and without a newly developed cementslurry spreader were evaluated. One of the quality indicators of newly-constructed CTB is uniformity. CTB uniformitywas measured in this research on seven pavement reconstruction projects located in Utah andWyoming. Three of the sites utilized cement in powder form, while four of the sites used cementslurry. The uniformity of the CTB layers constructed using cement powder was compared tothose constructed with cement slurry using the coefficients of variation computed from severalfield and laboratory measurements. The results indicate that CTB construction using cement slurry can be expected to yieldsimilar results to CTB construction using cement powder. A distinct advantage of cement slurryis that it can be used in urban areas without the risks of fugitive dust inherent in cement powderapplications. The use of a recently developed cement slurry spreader decreases CTB variabilityon projects where cement slurry is used. Because of its direct application to urban pavementmanagement, this research will be especially beneficial to city transportation engineers seekingto reap the benefits of cement stabilization in densely populated residential and commercial areaswhere the use of cement powder is not usually an option.
