Rapidly growing demand for stainless steel in China has been providing mills in Asia and elsewhere with a market for a sizeable portion of their output. China has stainless imports well in excess of 2Mt/y. However, that requirement is likely to fall sharply over the next few years as stainless steelmaking in China is growing faster than anywhere else. Indeed, so much additional capacity may be built that China will one day have the potential to be a net exporter; and that day may not be too far away, say Sheffield based steel analysts, MEPS. It is clear that the scale of growth in stainless production will make China one of the world's largest producers, and alter the balance of supply not only in Asia but globally.
