The future of steelmaking in England and Wales has been cast under a shadow, following an announcement of major job losses by Corus, Europe's largest steel company and third largest in the world. 'Steel Technology International' reports. A UK House of Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee will closely question executives and trade unions from the Anglo-Dutch steelmaking giant Corus, about their role in a crisis which has resulted in hundreds of redundancies during the summer. In June and July of this year, Corus announced that significant cost and efficiency programmes would be implemented in order to improve its competitive position in the market place. The programme involves three waves of redundancies during 2000-2001, in business units manufacturing a variety of flat steel products for a range of markets, including the automotive industry, construction and engineering sectors, domestic appliances and packaging. Approximately 1300 jobs will be lost.
