Layton Helps Build One of Nation's Largest Rental Car Centers

When Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's new rental car center opened in January 2006, it was the largest car rental facility in the nation. Located on 140 acres west of the airport, the center consists of a 2.4 million-sq-ft, three-level garage and a 118,000-sq-ft customer service building on the fourth level. The building footprint covers approximately 17 acres - the equivalent of 13 football fields. The balance of the site houses the central plant and service facilities of some 13 car rental companies. Rick Griffin, Project Manager for Abacus Project Management, Inc., said the 175 million dollars facility began in late 2000 when the City of Phoenix Aviation Department hired Abacus to fulfill the role of program manager.
