Advanced technology underwater sonar equipment will be Mailed by PIRSA in the South Australian section of the River Murray this summer. The sonar has the potential to unlock many of the secrets of fish in the turbid waters of the Murray. Called the dual frequency identification sonar, or DIDSON, it produces high quality video images, similar to an ultrasound, that can be displayed and recorded on a laptop computer. The images allow researchers to identify, count and observe fish in water that generally would be too muddy for any normal visual methods to work effectively.
