A Space Shuttle launch relies on its main engines to reach orbit. Engine measurements produce complex and unpredictable dynamic signals that are frequently corrupted with noise from many sources within the engine system. Examination of these measurements has stimulated the development of a hierarchy of advanced signal analysis techniques. These methods process and display pertinent diagnostic intelligence that is hidden within a measurement signal. Vital fault signature components can be enhanced and identified to provide better insight into defect symptoms thereby reducing false alarms or misinterpretations. The more useful techniques are described in this article with application examples drawn from actual engine tests.
