Steel Industry Upturn Elicits Guarded Optimism

The fact that U.S. Steel Corp. month recalled about 800 workers at its flat-rolling mill in Granite City, Illinois, was noted as one of the first signs that key markets of the steel industry have bottomed out, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. U.S. Steel plans to have four of five taconite production lines operating by September at its Minntac plant in Mountain Iron, Minn (see story on page 9). Minntac has been running one taconite line since June, when 321 workers were recalled from a layoff in February. U.S. Steel also owns Keetac, a taconite mine and pellet plant at Keewatin, Minn., which remains shut down.
