Sex Role Ideology, Relationship Context, and Responseto Sexual Coercion in College Females

This study examined the impacts of traditional sexrole orientation and relationship context upon women'sresponses to sexual coercion in a sample of 114 female un-dergraduates in the northwestern USA. We examined differ-ences in the amount of time participants allowed a simulatedsexually coercive situation to continue, comparing groupsbased upon the extent to which participants endorsedtraditional feminine sex roles on the Sex Role IdeologyScale, as well as the context of the relationship in which suchbehaviors occurred, which was manipulated as an indepen-dent variable. Results indicated that individuals in the long-term relationship condition took significantly longer toterminate the vignette than did their peers. However, nosignificant effect of traditionality upon response latency wasobserved.
