BREASTSCREEN AUSTRALIA:How WE HANDLE VARIABILITY IN INTERPRETIVE SKILLS

BreastScreen aims to reduce breast cancer mortality through early detection while minimizing potential adverse effects of screening for individual women. Perception of significant mammographic abnormalities and accurate interpretation are necessary to ensure early detection and to keep unnecessary investigations to a minimum. Each radiologist must meet the uniform national standards for screen reading to participate in BreastScreen. Failure to meet these standards is uncommon, but when it occurs the unlikely event requires the screening pro gram, and the radiologist to work together to solve the problem.
