A common question that any exporter selling overseas can ask is : "Will my company get paid?" When you export, you are always confronted by uncertainty, as the consequences can be bad if the buyer does not pay in time, or if something goes wrong and the payment from overseas is delayed. You can significantly reduce the risk of non-payment by asking the overseas buyer to pay under a letter of credit (L/c). However, it would not always be possible to insist on L/C from the buyer, keeping in mind the business relationship and competition in the market. When exports are made on a basis other than L/C, getting payment on time from the buyer depends on various probabilities. Such buyer or "commercial risk" emanates from lending to a business entity.
