We demonstrated a non-rubbing liquid crystal alignment method utilizing an Inkjet printed polyimide (PI) layer for liquid crystal displays using flexible substrates. A uniform LC alignment on the plastic substrates was achieved by a two-step Inkjet printing method; first by the PI printing and followed by the empty cartridge printing. The disparity in electro-optical performance for the twisted nematic (TN) cell with Inkjet printed PI on plastic substrates and the cell with rubbed PI alignment layers is negligible.
