The inclusion of engineering practices in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) (NGSS Lead States 2013) has prompted reflection about similarities and differences between science and engineering practice. The extent to which grades 6-12 students enroll in courses designed to explicitly teach the content and practices of engineering is limited, particularly in the middle grades (Cantrell and Robinson 2002; Cantrell et al. 2006). The integration of science concepts and engineering practices, as reflected in the NGSS, will be necessary as more engineering content transitions into the curricula of traditional science subjects. Though this poses many challenges for teachers, the integration of science and engineering does ultimately reflect the real-world work of scientists and engineers and the vision set forth in the NGSS.
