This article contained the following errors, which are corrected here: 1. Page 615: The upper magnitude limit of mb ≤ 6.8, given just above Equation 5, relates to Equation 6 and has to be corrected to mb ≤ 6.6 in agreement with the largest value given in Figure 3C. 2. Page 616, Table 2: The value 5.4 for the event of 10 January 1986, appears in the wrong column for MS,ISC. It has to be moved into the column for mb,NEIC. As such it has been used to calculate the correct proxy value MW(mb,NEIC). 3. Page 619, right column, second paragraph after the bullet points: Delete M (N = 51) and rewrite the remaining part of the sentence on this line as follows: “(N = 481 values after 1962 plus N = 316 proxy MS,ISC values for the unspecified M in the Gupta et al. (1986) catalog), or ML values (N = 3).”
