Methods for quantifying hemodialysis are currently based on measurements of small solute clearance obtained either from instantaneous changes in dialy-sate conductivity or as an integrated urea clearance from fitting the predialysis and postdialysis urea concentrations to a mathematical model or equation. For accuracy and consistency, the instantaneous method requires multiple measurements during a dialysis treatment whereas the integrated method requires careful attention to the method for drawing the postdialysis blood sample. If performed properly, results are comparable and agree well with in vitro measurements of dialyzer urea clearance.
