Antisubmarine warfare (ASW) technology and tactics have been addressed, discussed and studied almost constantly since the beginning of World War II. ASW became an art form, utilizing passive and active sonar mounted on the ocean floor, reaching a peak of application during the Cold War. The specialized skills associated with the art of ASW were defined, and training of the ASW operators and crews was paramount.
