The market for steel from electric steel plants continues to grow since last decadereaching close to 450 million tons in 2015 (28 % of the crude steel production).Originally devoted to the production simple long products as construction steelbars and rebars at lowest cost, nowadays high quality steel are produced with highrequirement to clean steel. At the same time reliability and high availability ischallenging due to the tough global international competition.The common factor for all EAF-type when producing high quality steel is to minimizethe nitrogen level and slag in the liquid steel during tapping through a tappingspout or EBT and assuming a tight tap stream.Both needs high elaborated refractory MgO-C based bricks or sleeves with a highresistance to hot erosion and for the spout top monolithic solution sometimesprecast with a high thermal shock resistance.The paper is detailing some innovative solutions for these critical area as well ashot and cold repair technology possibilities for reaching the best performance andhigh availability of the furnace.
