U.S. shrimp imports are well on track to top last year's total of 1.23 billion pounds (557,919 metric tons). Through the first eight months of 2011, they were up 3.5 percent to 757 million pounds (343,370 metric tons), reported the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Fisheries Service. Imports in August alone increased 9.8 percent year-on-year to 97 million pounds (43,998 metric tons), thanks largely to higher volumes arriving from India, China, Indonesia, Ecuador and Mexico. The greatest increase came from Mexico.
