On the 29 October 2012, after mounting concern, restrictions were placed on the importation of ash trees into Great Britain to combat chalara dieback of ash. The restrictions were imposed with immediate effect and, for the first time in decades, a British tree made headline news on television and radio, in the newspapers and indeed around the world. The disease, caused by the fungus Chalara fraxinea, leads to leaf loss and tree death. It has already affected trees in England and Scotland, and killedtrees in parts of mainland Europe. About 90% of ash trees in Denmark have been lost as a result of the disease. Since October enormous effort has been made across the UK to support the import restrictions and to take action to prevent the disease spreading. The restrictions were put in place before the main tree planting season got under way in late November. Movement restrictions within the whole of mainland Britain were also imposed.
