Introduction. - The main aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in plasma total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation induced by oral administration of 800 mg per day of coffeeberry extract or placebo for 4 weeks in 20 sportsmen. Summary of the facts. -Total antioxidant capacity was significantly higher in the coffee-berry versus placebo group at the post-supplementation trial (1.8±0.2mmoL/L versus 1.6 ±0.1 mmoL/L, respectively, P< 0.05). Plasma total phenolic content was increased with lipid peroxidation reduced at post-supplementation assessment in the coffeeberry group (P<0.05). No subject reported any side effects from coffeeberry or placebo.Conclusions. - These results generally suggest that the coffeeberry formulation administered for 4 weeks might have played a role in enhancing antioxidant system and free-radical scavenging activity in young sportsmen.
