When the first utility vehicle hit the market 20 years ago, few envisioned this somewhat awkward-looking machine would ultimately give birth to one of the fastest-growing, most dynamic segments in outdoor power equipment. "Back in 1987, the utility vehicle was introduced as a solution for farmers who needed a versatile machine that could haul heavy loads and maneuver in tight spaces," says Michael Bedis, who was a design engineer and marketing coordinator before assuming his current role as a senior design engineer for John Deere Gator utility vehicles. "Word of mouth spread quickly, and soon everyone from contractors and landscapers to hunters and homeowners were putting these machines to use for a variety of purposes."
