EFFECT OF BIO-ETHANOL QUALITY ON GASOLINE/ BIO-ETHANOL MIXTURE PROPERTIES

Four commercial bio-ethanol samples have been characterised and added in amount of 5% v/v to a premium quality petroleum gasoline.It was found that the addition of bio-ethanol to the base petroleum gasoline distorted its distillation curve resulting in reduction of evaporate temperature in the range 5-10 deg C between 5 and 95% v/v.For the different commercial bio-ethanol samples the range of distortion was different:the bio-ethanol samples that have ethanol content of 96.2 and 99.3% the distortion was 10 deg C lower boiling temperature in the evaporate range 5-45% and 85-95%)v/v;the bio-ethanol sample that has 92.0%)ethanol the distortion was 10 deg C lower boiling temperature in the evaporate range 5-95% v/v;while the so-called'weak brandy'that has 78% ethanol the distortion was 5 deg C lower boiling temperature in the evaporate range 5-40% v/v.The Reid vapour pressure of all investigated blends petroleum gaso-line/bio-ethanol was 7 kPa higher than the base gasoline,while the research octane number was 1 point higher.Only the blend of 99.3% containing ethanol sample with the petroleum gasoline was stable against lamination during cooling.Abnormal reduction in olefins and aromatics content in all investigated petroleum gasoline/bio-ethanol blends except that made of'weak brandy'was observed.
