Successful treatment of subacute enterotoxemia type D in a lamb.

A case of subacute enterotoxemia type D treated successfully in a lamb is described. A 45 days old unvaccinated Chios lamb was admitted to our private practice because of neurological signs that had started 2 hours previously. The lamb presented in lateral recumbence, blind with bilateral dorsomedial strabismus, opisthotonous and episodes of paddling movements when stimulated. The final diagnosis was based on the clinical findings and the necropsy results of two recently dead animals of the herd with the same symptoms. The lamb was successfully treated with dexamethasone (0.5 mg/kg i.v.), thiamin (10 mg/kg i.m.) and enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg i.m.). The neurological signs were completely resolved within two hours after treatment. The administration of enrofloxacin was repeated the next two days at the same dose.
