Freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala were exposed to both lethal (0.343 mg/l) and sublethal (0.114 mg/l) levels of zinc cyanide to study the changes in the respiratory potential and the biochemical factors. Decline in the oxygen consumption rate was recorded in both lethal and sublethal concentrations. Appreciable decline in the biochemical profiles such as total, soluble and structural protein and increased total carbohydrate content of the fish was also observed. Magnitude of these changes increased over time with both concentrations and more marked in the liver than the gills and muscle tissue. This study reflects the extent of the toxic effects of zinc cyanide induced cumulative deleterious effects at various functional levels in the widely consumed freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala.
