摘要

I read with interest Dr Lindeque's guest editorial "Medical Student Education: Time for a Radical Change" in the November 2010 issue of ORTHOPEDICS. While I respect Dr Lindeque's commitment to education and his interest in refining the educational process of today's budding physicians, I disagree with his assertion that the medical educational process be truncated and more concise, akin to the European model whereupon high school graduates can directly matriculate into medical school.While this proposal would indeed streamline the years spent in training and diminish educational debt, I believe it ignores a basic element of physician training: emotional maturity. The word "education" is derived from the Latin root educo, meaning to draw out.
