Toxicology of urotropine in chicken embryo

Macroscopic and microscopic changes in chicken embryosexposed to urotropine is described. Groups of 10 fertile chicken eggs each were injected 10,100, 200 and 300 mg/egg urotropine at the 4th day of incubation. Groups of 10 egg controlseach were injected with and empty needle into the yolk sac, or not treated or injected0.5ml/egg phosphate buffered saline. Macroscopic abnormality in size, color, and otherexternal body features in embryos were accompanied by pathological changes in the kidney.These alterations occurred in a dose-related manner. Higher urotropine levels was relatedwith marked embryonic death. The results suggest that urotropine at high concentrationsare toxic to chicken embryos. The findings need to be confirmed in mammalians but suggestcaution in extended use of urotropine compounds.
