Multitesting of brucellosis in small ruminants.

The seroprevalence of brucellosis in various regions in India was determined in 398 goats and 604 sheep using the rose bengal plate (RBPT), standard tube agglutination (STAT), complement fixation (CFT) and indirect-ELISA tests. A high number of positives were found in Karnataka, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. ELISA detected 15.77% positives in 158, CFT 11.88% in 119, STAT 11.08% in 111 and RBPT 7.58% in 76 animals. I-ELISA detected 15.33% in 61 goats and 16.06% in 97 sheep whereas RBPT only detected 5.28% in 21 goats and 9.11% in 55 sheep. There were significant differences between sensitivities of RBPT, STAT and I-ELISA. Interestingly, the RBPT test was least sensitive in goats (62.50%) and sheep (67.74%) whereas I-ELISA was more sensitive at 93.55% in goats and 87.50% in sheep. I-ELISA produced the highest performance index value in both species. In goats, the highest agreement was between RBPT and CFT while in sheep it was between I-ELISA and CFT.
