Sequential evaluation of proteinuria, albuminuria and urinary proteinelectrophoresis in dogs with diabetes mellitus .

Systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose,complete blood count, biochemical serum profile, abdominal ultrasound, urinalysis,urine culture, urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC), albumin-to-creatinine ratio(UAC), and percentage of high and low molecular weight protein were determinedevery 30 days for 6 months in 10 dogs with diabetes mellitus. Similar measurementswere done on 14 normal control dogs. Diabetic dogs were treated for glycemia andnone developed systemic arterial hypertension. Diabetic dogs maintained normal UPCwithout albuminuria (UAC < 0.03) at follow up. Dogs did not show any nephropathysuggesting that appropriate glycemic control with normal blood pressure may haveprotected renal function in diabetic dogs.
