Genotype X culture media interactive effects on in-vitro green plantlet regeneration efficiency were examined using mature embryo derived scutellar calli involving 22 indica rice cultivars and five media combinations. Callus induction and plantlet regeneration were found to be greatly influenced by the genotypes and 2,4-D concentration in media. Significant interaction effects were observed between genotype and concentration of 2,4-D for callus induction. The rice variety Mahsuri showed highest regeneration frequency (79.3%). Basal MS with 2.0 mg l-1 of 2,4-D was found to be the most suitable for most of the cultivars for callus induction and regeneration. Genotypes and media composition and their interactions were the major determinants of in-vitro response.
