Growers push back on district plan

Growers at a meeting held in Maunu on March 23 endorsed Horticulture NewZealand's strategy of vigorously pushing back against proposed changes to the rural provisions of the Whangarei District Plan, says Hort NZ business manager, Chris Keenan.He said 28 growers attended the gathering to discuss Draft Plan Change 85A-D Rural. Mr Keenan said the attendees had been surprised to hear about what was proposed, including the rezoning of valuable fertile volcanic land.The draft suggested that such land be able to be cut up into 2ha pieces. Nine of 14 proposed areas were in the heart of fertile volcanic land which had the potential for future horticultural development.
