Grammatophyllum speciosum: A Gigantic Specimen in Flower and Fruit

GRAMMATOPHYLLUM IS A GENUS comprised of 12 species found in tropical areas of southern Asia, such as Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and the islands of Java. Grammatophyllum speciosum is generally found in Thailand, starting from a latitude of 15 degrees north, and southward. Since I became interested in orchids 80 years ago, the first time I came across a huge specimen of Gram, speciosum was in 1963 at the orchid show in Singapore's Turf Club during the 4th World Orchid Conference. This massive specimen, a major attraction at the event, had been placed on the left side of the event's main staircase and each of the plant's 12 stems was in full bloom.
