AMONG WARM-GROWING ORCHIDS, VANDAS ARE CERTAINLY AMONG the most popular plants in cultivation today. The more than 50 species in the genus are widespread, ranging from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka through southern China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines as far south as New Guinea and Australia, and westward to the southernmost Japanese islands. Some grow at sea level, while others are found growing at altitudes that exceed 6,560 feet (2,000 m). Vandas have been hybridized over the years with Ascocenda, Arachnis, Aerides, Neofinetia and other monopodials.
